Looking for something a little different to do this August? From exhibitions, new music and culture to speed dating and off-beat humour, there’s something for everyone in our latest ‘What’s on in Leeds’ post…

In Their Footsteps – Leeds City Museum, Millennium Square, LS2 8BH

Leeds City Museum hosts this thought-provoking exhibition from 1st July – 8th January. A look at how the First World War impacted on the people of Leeds, In Their Footsteps is curated by 14-24-year-old members of The Preservative Party – the museum’s young group of curators.

Visitors can try on old uniforms and create their own medal as well as enjoying the remarkable enterprise and ingenuity shown by the people of the time, such as Christmas cards made from trench biscuits!

White Cloth Comedy Club – White Cloth Gallery, 24-26 Aire Street, LS1 4HT

White Cloth Gallery is a great little gallery that holds exhibitions, workshops and film nights on a regular basis, but on the first Thursday of every month (4th August this time around) comedy is king. Hosted by comedian Martin Semple (a former soldier in the Household Cavalry!) and featuring high-class comedians from around the world, this is our new favourite comedy night in Leeds.

Courage, Conscience and Creativity – Leeds City Museum, Millennium Square, LS2 8BH

The Leeds Story Gallery in LCM will be the home of another exhibition as part of the WWI commemorations, but this time the emphasis is on the peaceful conscientious objectors. Featuring two main projects – a textile banner created by various interfaith groups that has taken 18 months to create, and a collection of stories and objects from conscientious objectors to the war.

Robb Johnson – Lending Room, The Library, 229 Woodhouse Lane, LS2 3AP

Acoustic singer-songwriting legend, Robb Johnson, has been making music since the 70s. Often thought of as the musicians’ musician, Robb has worked with folk great such as Roy Bailey as well as touring the country with local heroes Chumbawumba. 25 albums into his career he shows no sign of slowing down and can be seen at the Lending Room on 7th August.

Speed Dating Leeds – Chino Latino, Boar Lane, LS1 5NS

In the world of Tinder and online dating, speed dating can seem a bit old hat, but it’s also a lot of fun if you don’t take it too seriously. For a fiver you can try out the phenomenon at Chino Latino on 3rd August – you never know, you might meet ‘The one’!
