The best family SUV – our top four

Chinese SUV Great Wall Hover H3

What’s the best family SUV on the market today? This is a question anyone with a growing family will find themselves asking at some point. With a combination of great looks, practicality, ample space, and a driving height that gives superb visibility, these vehicles are incredibly popular right now.

Here are our four family SUV favourites…

Jaguar F-Pace – the driver’s family SUV

The Jaguar F-Pace combines the practicality of a typical SUV with the aggressive lines and drivability of a sports saloon – and that’s no mean feat! Our favourite in the range is the Portfolio with the 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine, which combines decent fuel economy (47 mpg), plenty of power (300bhp), and an eye-watering 0-60 in 6.2 seconds. It’s by no means class-leading in interior space, but it’s well put together and perfect for the driver with a growing family who wants to hang on to the ability to enjoy a Sunday drive out of town.

Skoda Kodiaq – the new kid with big ideas!

The VAG group rarely disappoints when it comes to producing well thought out cars, and the Kodiaq is another example of a beautifully designed SUV. This new 7-seater may or may not be the best family SUV available, but it’s certainly the one with the largest boot – a class leading 630 litres with five seats in place. A well-balanced car on the road, it’s not the sporty drive of the Jaguar, but you always feel safe and secure – especially on the motorway. Inside the Skoda you’ll find an interior built to survive anything a family can throw at it, and a ride so quiet that your kids will definitely be the noisiest thing you’ll hear!

Kia Sorento – the smart buy

Once an absolute laughing stock, Kia’s recent offerings have been excellent throughout the range, and the upgraded Sorento is no exception. The Sorento doesn’t excel in any area, but that’s not what Kia is about. Instead, what you get is a 7-seater 4×4 with one engine to choose from that will deliver hassle-free family motoring in a reliable and good looking package.

Audi Q7 – a touch of class

Say what you like about Audi, but they really do know how to put a car together. The Q7 oozes quality inside and out with the best trim level of any car on offer in this list. The 3-0-litre TDI engine version is quiet and refined, the chassis is almost as good as the Jaguar F-Pace, the interior cabin space and finish is class-leading, and its safety rating heads the field. However, starting at just shy of £50,000, you certainly pay for that quality!
