The Royal Armouries in Leeds

As a city steeped in history and culture, and this week we’re going to talk about some of the wonderful museums and galleries in Leeds, scattered around the beautiful city centre. From stunning art to interesting local history, we feel that there’s something for everyone to enjoy here.

Leeds City Museum – Millennium Square, LS2 8BH

Leeds City Museum is situated in the heart of Leeds in Millennium Square. This beautiful period building features six galleries covering everything from the ancient world, nature, and the story of Leeds itself. Diminutive though it may be, this well-featured museum is a must for history lovers.

The Henry Moore Institute – 74 The Headrow, Leeds LS1 3AH

Local hero Henry Moore is a name synonymous with sculpture, and The Henry Moore Institute is a celebration of the medium. With exhibitions all year round showing the work of artists from near and far, we thoroughly recommend a visit when you’re next in Leeds – but prepare to be challenged as much as wowed by the art on show!

Leeds Art Gallery – The Headrow, LS1 3AA

Also situated on The Headrow is Leeds Art Gallery, a stunning and imposing building that’s beautiful inside and out. Always host to thought-provoking and challenging exhibitions, Leeds Art Gallery is currently undergoing some much-needed repair work and is out of action for the rest of the year. It’s still worth including in this list, though, because it’s a great place to spend an afternoon.

Royal Armouries – Armouries Dr, LS10 1LT

Just a short walk across the city to Leeds Dock will see you staring up at the Royal Armouries Museum. This massive modern structure was constructed in 1996 to house the national collection of arms and armour, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in the history of weaponry. With six galleries dedicated to, amongst others, self-defence, hunting, Oriental and peace, you’ll need to dedicate a whole day to see everything here. Not bad for a free museum!

We hope that our blog post on the more cultural side of Leeds inspires you to pop into the city and visit one or all of these great galleries and museums. Of course, you know that you can leave your car with us at Trafalgar Street car park where we’ll take extra special care of it while you spend the day soaking up some new knowledge.
