The Best SUVs – Our Top Picks

The best SUVs – our favourites

Love them or hate them, the sports utility vehicle is here to stay, and with so many models to choose from, it’s time to decide which are the best SUVs around according to the Trafalgar Street car park team!

These big and bold beasts provide great visibility on the road and make everyone inside feel safe, and we think our choices provide the best combination of style, drivability and reliability, so let’s dive in and check out our first pick…

BMW X3 – the driver’s SUV

If you’ve got around £40,000 burning a hole in your pocket, and you’re looking for a beautifully engineered machine that ticks all of the practicality boxes and has the capacity to set your heart fluttering on the A-roads, look no further than the BMW X3. There’s plenty of space for the kids, shopping and a dog, and the interior is up to the usual BMW standards, but the engines could be a little more refined when you push them. However, the driving experience is as good as any BMW saloon, and that’s what you’re paying for.

Skoda Kodiaq

If you’re looking for one of the best SUVs on the market, but you’re also on a budget, the Kodiaq is well worth your consideration. You get classic Volkswagon Group engineering in one of the most well-rounded SUVs available at around £25,000, and that’s incredible value. The Skoda isn’t class-leading in any area, but it does everything well enough to tick most of the boxes if you’re after an SUV but you don’t really have any single overriding need or desire. Well done Skoda!

Volvo XC90

It used to be that you’d buy a Volvo because you knew that after a meteor wiped out most of life on earth, it would be the cockroaches and you in your Volvo who survived! The company has stated that they want to get back to that level of safety, and the XC90 is a great start. The second generation model may start at over £50,000 – but it’s literally built like a tank, is as luxurious as anything on the road and looks fantastic. It’s not the driver’s car that the X3 is, but it’s huge, practical and has the best autonomous driver set-up in the class.

We know that any list of the best SUVs that leaves off the Audi Q5 is controversial, but we feel that these three wonderful vehicles provide everything a growing and active family could need in a car – we hope that you do too!
